A New Era for Officiating Development in Australia

Table Tennis Australia is excited to announce the launch of two major initiatives set to transform officiating across the country. Marking the most significant advancement in Officiating Education in over 20 years, these initiatives bring a fresh, modern approach to training, clarify progression pathways, and ensure Australian officials are fully equipped to meet the demands of contemporary tournaments.

Level 2 State Umpires Course — Now Live

The Level 2 State Umpires Course is officially live following a comprehensive peer review and full structural redesign. The updated course offers clearer learning pathways, improved content alignment, and a sharper focus on the competencies required for contemporary tournament environments. This marks a significant step forward in the training and preparation of State Umpires nationwide.

To support a more effective learning experience, the course has been restructured into a hybrid model, featuring both online and practical components. This format makes the pathway clearer, more practical, and more accessible for prospective officials across all states and territories.

New Officiating Accreditation Framework Released

We also introduce the new Officiating Accreditation Framework, a complete overhaul of how officiating progression is structured and supported in Australia.

The framework:

• clearly articulates the competencies required for modern Australian tournaments at all tiers,
• establishes a fully structured pathway with no ambiguities, and
• will guide development opportunities, progression pathways, and national event official selection from 2026 onward.

This new model delivers stronger national consistency and enhances the clarity and confidence with which officials can progress through the system.

Introducing a New Level: National Referee (Advanced)

A significant enhancement within the updated framework is the introduction of a new accreditation tier, National Referee (Advanced).

Developed in consultation with senior referees, this level recognises the increasing complexity of the National Championships and the need for highly proficient referees with advanced technical knowledge and leadership capability, while at the same time, provides clarity of opportunities to officials at other levels.

Special acknowledgement is extended to Kameron Chan (TTVUL Training Coordinator), Graeme Ireland (ITTF Technical Commissioner), and the National Officiating Working Group for their substantial contributions, expertise, and endorsement across state, national, and international perspectives. Their work has ensured that the framework is robust, contemporary, and aligned with TTA’s objectives for the recruitment, development, and readiness of umpires and referees.

National Alignment Work for 2026

Work is underway on a national alignment plan for 2026 to strengthen consistency across states and territories, streamline shared practices, and establish coordinated points of contact for officiating development.
