From Spinneroos to Ping.Pong.Play — A New Game Begins
Published Tue 23 Dec 2025
For years, Spinneroos served as Table Tennis Australia’s Foundation entry point for junior players, sparking a love of table tennis in thousands of Aussie kids. But as the school-sport landscape evolved, so did the need for a brand that felt bold, modern, and truly inclusive.
Enter Ping.Pong.Play a vibrant new identity that does exactly what it says, invites everyone to play.
Backed by the Australian Sports Commission’s Play Well Participation Grant, Table Tennis Australia (TTA) partnered with SPIKE Creative to transform Spinneroos from a traditional program into a nationwide movement that connects kids, teachers, and communities through play regardless of background, age, or ability.
The goal was simple but ambitious:
“Create a name that feels modern, fun, and unmistakably table tennis.”
While the Spinneroos program had heart, the name no longer resonated with today’s students or teachers, and it didn’t clearly signal the sport. The challenge was to craft a brand that was:
-
Instantly recognised as table tennis
-
Fun, inclusive, and exciting
-
Appealing to both primary and secondary school students
-
Flexible enough to expand from schools into clubs and communities
Together with SPIKE Creative, Table Tennis Australia undertook a detailed investigation of the current market, analysing existing youth sport program names and logo trends to understand what resonated most with teenage audiences. The focus was on identifying a name and visual identity that felt modern, relevant, and exciting, while still clearly communicating what the sport was. This process ensured the final brand would not only appeal to young people, but would instantly signal table tennis, creating strong recall, clarity, and connection from the first glance.
Through nationwide workshops and surveys with teachers, parents, and state associations, TTA uncovered a clear theme: fun, inclusion, confidence, and community had to be at the heart of the new identity.
“Ping Pong” quickly emerged as the people’s choice instantly familiar, light-hearted, and full of movement. It perfectly captured what makes table tennis unique: its rhythm, simplicity, and universal appeal.
When paired with “Play,” the idea came to life.
SPIKE Creative tested dozens of concepts from QuickHitz and Smash Squad to Table Tennis Stars — exploring speed, sound, and action. Yet one stood above the rest...
Ping.Pong.Play.
Three short words that pulse with energy and inclusion. It’s catchy. It’s joyful. It’s universal.
The visual identity followed suit bright, dynamic, and inclusive designed to excite students and teachers the moment they see it.
The transformation went far beyond a name or logo. TTA rebuilt Ping.Pong.Play from the ground up, ensuring it was curriculum-aligned, research-driven, and effortless for teachers to deliver.
Key features include:
-
Colour-coded resources aligned with the logo for easy navigation and visual consistency.
-
An interactive eLearning module for teachers and students, reflecting the design and energy of the rebrand.
-
A marketing toolkit and club implementation guide helping schools confidently connect with clubs while maintaining consistent branding across every level of the program.
Every element was designed to make delivery simple, engaging, and inclusive — turning “table tennis in schools” into something teachers love to teach, and students can’t wait to play.
Ping.Pong.Play is more than a rebrand it’s a cultural shift.
The program has re-energised schools across Australia, creating new pathways for students of all abilities. The name now resonates across classrooms, clubs, and communities, breaking down barriers and inviting everyone to pick up a paddle.
Thousands of students are discovering the confidence, connection, and joy that come from simply playing — proving that participation doesn’t just build skills; it builds belonging.
What began as a simple rebrand for TTA’s schools and clubs' program has now evolved into a national participation model one that invites and engages people from every corner of Australia to discover the joy of table tennis.
It’s no longer just a program; it’s a movement. As Ping.Pong.Play continues to grow, TTA’s mission is clear: to make table tennis a lifelong sport for every Australian.
