New Participation Record Set | Pre-COVID Membership Exceeded
Published Tue 07 Feb 2023
TTA is pleased to announce that following the completion of the 2022 census, a new participation record has been set and membership has exceeded pre-COVID levels.
PARTICIPATION
For the first time, the 200,000-participation mark has been reached, with 200,543 participants recorded in 2022.
This demonstrates a 47% increase compared to 2021 and easily eclipses the previous participation record of 168,560 set in 2019.
Looking more closely at the participation numbers, 118,000 participants were sourced directly through clubs/associations and 82,000 were sourced through TTA and States/Territories. Key highlights from within both cohorts include 60,000 participants through school activities, 30,000 participants through come-and-try days, 25,000 through social play, plus 14,000 through tournaments.
MEMBERSHIP
10,440 members were achieved in 2022. This figure is the third-highest membership on record and exceeds pre-COVID membership by nearly 400 members. Within the 10,440 figure, more than 6,000 Full Members and nearly 4,400 Recreational Members were achieved.
Aaron Tuckfield, TTA’s Senior Manager – Participation and Development Program commented, “Both the participation and membership numbers are very pleasing. Understandably, during COVID, participation and membership took a hit, especially in 2020. Although the recovery started in 2021, setting a new participation record and surpassing pre-COVID membership numbers in 2022 exceeded our expectations.
“We fully appreciate that resources are limited at all levels of the sport, and it’s the efforts of all coaches, volunteers, administrators, and officials who work tirelessly to provide opportunities for people to play.
“With a new TTA Strategic Plan commencing this year, which once again has a strong focus on participation and development, we look forward to working with all stakeholders to continue to grow our great game.”
TTA would like to thank all States/Territories and clubs/associations for their assistance in completing the 2022 census.
