2022 Commonwealth Games Table Tennis Nomination Criteria (Able-Bodied)
Published Thu 02 Sep 2021
TTA and Commonwealth Games Australia have approved the Nomination Criteria (Able-Bodied) for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. To view the Nomination Criteria (Able-Bodied) document, please click here.
The document should be read in conjunction with the ITTF Athlete Allocation System for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. To view the ITTF Athlete Allocation System, please click here.
UPDATED APPROACH:
Historically for Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games, the approach used by TTA for selecting athletes and teams has been to hold qualification tournaments for the vast majority of (and sometimes for all) positions on the team.
For the 2022 Commonwealth Games, a different approach will be used whereby the National Selection Panel will select 3 out of 4 players per gender and the final player per gender will be selected following a Qualification Tournament.
The rationale for the change in approach is:
- It reflects the increased professionalism of the TTA Able-Bodied High Performance Program in recent years, i.e. the National Coaches have continuous contact with all National Squad Members and therefore have a clearer understanding of the level, capability and dedication of each player.
- It will ensure that doubles combinations and teams combinations can be maximised, which will increase the likelihood of TTA medalling in events where we are statistically more likely to medal.
- It better aligns TTA with what the existing Commonwealth Games medal winning countries have as a standard practice (many select 100% of athletes and do not hold any qualification tournaments).
