A New Era of First-Class Table Tennis in Australia

Published Thu 03 Jul 2025

Table Tennis Australia is thrilled to announce the launch of a bold new event designed to showcase the nation’s best players in an intense, high-stakes playoff format. Held over three days in December 2025/January 2026, this high-performance competition will bring together the Top 12 male and Top 12 female athletes from across the nation to battle it out in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.

Exact dates for the event are yet to be determined and will be dependent on several factors including receiving the WTT calendar to ensure player availability and to avoid any clashes in schedules.

Qualification for the event will be earned through performance — featuring the semi-finalists (singles) and winners (doubles + mixed doubles) from the upcoming National Championships, starting this Sunday 6th July in Traralgon, and supplemented by the October 2025 National Rankings. This structure not only ensures the very best compete, but also incentivises strong results at major domestic events, with the ability to gain precious ranking points at upcoming Nationals and TTA Tours Brisbane and Canberra.

Participation in the new event will be mandatory for all athletes who qualify. The qualification pathway is as follows:

  • Singles (Men & Women):
Top 4 semi-finalists from the National Championships automatically qualify

  • Doubles (Men’s & Women’s):
National Champion pair (1 pair per gender) automatically qualifies

  • Mixed Doubles:
Winning pair from the National Championships qualifies

  • Total Qualified from Nationals:
    8 Singles athletes (4 Men & 4 Women)
    4 Doubles athletes (2 Men & 2 Women)
    2 Mixed Doubles athletes (1 Man & 1 Woman)

With the remaining places to be filled with the highest-ranked eligible players, not already qualified, and based on the October 2025 Open National Rankings. To be eligible to compete all athletes must hold a current Australian passport or citizenship.

“This new event is an exciting and necessary step in lifting the standard, visibility and commercial appeal of elite table tennis in Australia,” said Nicole Adamson, CEO of Table Tennis Australia. “The event is designed to bring the very best together in a professional environment, where we can celebrate performance, drive development, and engage fans like never before.”

Beyond engaging Australia’s top athletes in meaningful, high-level competition, the new event represents the chance for Table Tennis Australia to drive club and fan engagement nationwide and create a commercially attractive event product that will help drive the growth of the sport across all states and territories.

Launching the new event represents a major step forward in enhancing visibility, performance culture, and commercial potential within Australian table tennis; delivering a professional, spectator-friendly experience that puts the nation’s top talent in the spotlight.

Further details including dates, location and prize structure will be released shortly.
