All-Australian Final at 2022 Commonwealth Games
Published Sun 07 Aug 2022
The Women’s Singles Classes 6-10 gold medal match was the first time an all-Australian final has taken place at any Commonwealth Games.
Qian Yang and Li Na Lei showed their class on court in a tight 3-1 match [12-10, 16-14, 7-11, 11-9] that saw Qian Yang claim Australia’s first table tennis gold medal for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
“I am proud that we were able to achieve an all-Australian final in the Women’s Singles Class 6-10 which was our goal for the event,” National Head Coach (Para) Alois Rosario said.

“Qian played very well to claim gold over Li Na in a tight 3-1 match and they both showed their level.
“After Melissa Tapper won this event in 2018, I am pleased that we’ve been able to keep the gold medal with Australia once again.”
The focus for the Para Squad turns to Ma Lin’s gold medal match against Joshua Stacey of Wales.
It was a heart breaking day for our Able-Bodied athletes however, where our athletes came up short in three semi final matches. However, the fight is still on for 3 bronze medals and our Women’s Doubles pair of Min Hyung Jee and Jian Fang Lay have progressed to the semi-finals.

“It was a tough day, being so close to victory in three semi-final matches. Our players played well and fought hard, but sometimes the 50-50 matches fall the other way,” John Murphy, National Head Coach (Able-Bodied) said.
“We will rest and recover as much as possible and look to come out firing in all three bronze medal matches. Plus we have a Women’s Doubles semi-final too, so to be in the medal hunt for four events is a big plus.”
