Australia secure two magnificent victories in the Round of 32 of WTT Champions Chongqing 2026
Published Thu 12 Mar 2026
Both Nicholas Lum and Yangzi Liu have progressed into the Round of 16 at the WTT Champions Chongqing, following outstanding victories over Darko Jorgic and Sabine Winter.
Lum, currently ranked as Australia's #5 in our most recent rankings update sensationally dismantled world number 16 Darko Jorgic (11-8, 11-8, 12-10) in Chongqing, marking his best performance yet at a WTT Champions event, and will take on Japan's Sora Matsushima in the next stage of the competition on Friday.
Lum fought back from 6-2 down in the first set, but then won nine of the next eleven points to take the game, before securing a 12-10 win in the final game to progress to the Round of 16 in a WTT Champions event for the first time.
After Lum's wonderful victory, Liu took to the table, facing Germany's Winter, who is currently ranked #11 in the world.
Liu, Australia's current #1, had only competed against Winter once previously, winning in the WTT Feeder Dusseldorf 2021, and immediately came out on the front foot, winning the first game 11-5. The following two games were closer affairs, but Liu's resillience and endeavour shone through, as she took both by a score of 11-9, in what was a magnificent performance.
A round of 16 clash against sixth seed, China's Yidi Wang, is next up for Liu.
All at Table Tennis Australia send their warmest congratulations to both Nicholas and Yangzi, and wish all the very best for their upcoming round of 16 matches.
The round of 16 matches will be live streamed on the World Table Tennis YouTube channel.
