Australia Wins Silver at World Youth Championships
Published Wed 07 Dec 2022
The Australian trio of Aditya Sareen, Won Bae and Chulong Nie won silver in the Under 15 Boys’ Teams event at the World Youth Championships that are currently being played in Tunisia. In doing so, they have made history for Australia by winning our first ever medal at the World Youth Championships.
This is a truly phenomenal performance and underlines both the significant improvement our Able-Bodied High Performance Program has made in recent years, and that our current generation on youngsters are quickly on the rise.
This result didn’t happen by chance – it was a mixture of careful planning and ensuring we maximised our opportunities. Even qualifying for the World Youth Championships was an achievement in itself as the event is a highly restricted field, with only 8 teams qualifying to compete in Tunisia.
Once qualified, our players got on a hot streak to make it to the final. In our first match against host nation Tunisia it was an impressive 3-1 victory.

Up next was a strong France team in the semi final, however we were never headed and claimed a memorable 3-1 victory.

Then in the final we faced the might of China. Although the score line was 0-3, our youngsters acquitted themselves very well and didn’t look out of place playing on the biggest stage of their careers to date.
Well done Adi, Won and Chulong – you’ve done Australia proud and written another page in Australian table tennis history.
Play continues with individual events happening in the coming days.
