Australian 2023 World Championships Bid Moves a Step Closer
Published Wed 09 Oct 2019
As per previous correspondence, TTA is considering being part of a formal bid to host the 2023 World Championships. With the preliminary expressions of interest phase now closed, ITTF have confirmed that four countries are in the running – Australia, Germany, Kuwait and South Africa.
TTA is continuing to liaise with multiple State Governments and cities to determine whether a formal bid is feasible.
If Australia was to win the bidding process, it will be the first time the most prestigious table tennis event in the world is held in the Oceania region. Australia is fortunate in that it has multiple iconic cities and venues capable of hosting the event, not to mention a thriving tourism industry, which could provide an added boost to spectator numbers. We are in close proximity to Asia, both geographically and in time zones, thus benefitting a significant section of the sport’s TV and online followers.
The World Championships offer incredible global reach of over 500 million fans on fast-growing TV and digital platforms, helping to put any host city well and truly on the world’s sporting map and providing opportunities to create a strong legacy for the region’s aspiring stars.
TTA will provide further updates in the coming weeks once a final determination has been made on whether we will proceed with a formal bid.
