AUSTRALIAN TEAMS DOMINATE IN FIJI

In the Oceania Para Championships, Australia came away with 6 GOLD, 4 SILVER and 4 BRONZE medals in the Class Singles events and 2 GOLD medals in the Teams events. With these results, Australia has now qualified 6 athletes for the 2018 World Para Individual Championships. This is the best result yet for the Australian Para Table Tennis Team.

In the Oceania Cup, Australia was also dominant winning both the Mens and Womens Singles events. Jian Fang Lay took GOLD in the Womens Singles with Melissa Tapper (AUS) taking the SILVER medal. In the Mens Singles David Powell won GOLD with Kane Townsend (AUS) taking the SILVER medal.

 

David Powell and Jian Fang Lay will now represent Australia at the Mens and Womens World Cup respectively later in the year.

After competing in the Australian Junior Open the AUS Junior Team traveled to Fiji on April 12 arriving the evening before the start of the Oceania Junior Championships. Experiencing adversity off the table this Junior Team somehow pulled together and went onto win GOLD in all four Teams events – Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Cadet Boys and Cadet Girls Teams events. They also did themselves and Australia proud in the individual events winning 7 GOLD, 5 SILVER and 6 BRONZE medals.

 

Two outstanding performances need to be recognised being Holly Nicolas and Finn Luu. Holly and Finn won the quadruple crowns. Holly took out GOLD in the Junior Teams, the Junior Girls Singles, the Junior Girls Doubles and the Junior Mixed Doubles. Finn won GOLD in the Cadet Teams, Cadet Singles, Cadet Boys Doubles and Cadet Mixed Doubles events.

 

After their results in the Oceania Cadet Singles, Finn Luu and Sue Bin Oh will represent Australia at the World Cadet Challenge later in the year.

 

Australia has also qualified both the boys and girls teams to compete at this year’s World Junior Championships.
