Brett Sonnet Steps Down as TTA President
Published Thu 05 Sep 2019
MEDIA RELEASE
The TTA Board wish to advise that Brett Sonnet has tendered his resignation as a Director of TTA, citing personal reasons and increased business commitments. Brett was elected to the TTA Board in May 2017 and played a leading and pivotal role in identifying the governance, financial and operational difficulties that TTA faced in 2017. Subsequently, Brett was instrumental in the recovery of TTA and ascended to become TTA President following a new Board being elected at the 2018 AGM. During Brett’s time on the TTA Board, multiple significant achievements were realised, including but not limited to:
• Eliminating $496,000 (76%) of TTA’s debt.
• Preparing and implementing a new TTA Constitution, which was the catalyst behind TTA’s Sport Australia Governance Rating improving from 65% to 89%.
• Setting up a new Board Sub-Committee structure which has underpinned the work of the Board.
• Implementing the Event Agreement model for National Championships, which has ensured higher profit levels, plus greater exposure and promotion of the sport.
• Implementing a new 2019-2022 Whole of Sport Strategic Plan, which is the first time a whole of sport approach has been taken.
Moreover, Brett was instrumental in ensuring TTA’s viability in late 2017 when he generously loaned funds at a time when they were needed most.
Those who have had the privilege of working closely alongside Brett will attest to his tireless commitment to the sport over many years, for which the table tennis community will be forever grateful.
The TTA Board thanks Brett for his outstanding service as a Director of TTA and wish him all the best for the future. The TTA Board would like to note its appreciation for Brett’s inclusive leadership that allowed and inspired the Board to function effectively and collaboratively. TTA hopes that other opportunities to work together will arise in the future.
The TTA Board will elect a new President at its next Board Meeting on 19 September 2019. A public announcement and further information will be provided thereafter.
