Buddy Reid and Igor Klaf are World Champions, Aussies Claim Eight Medals
Published Mon 25 Jun 2018
More than 100 Aussies travelled to Las Vegas to compete at the World Veterans Championships from 18-24 June 2018. With a star-studded line-up in action including multiple World, Olympic and Continental Champions from yesteryear, our paddlers acquitted themselves with distinction by claiming eight medals including one gold.
Buddy Reid and Igor Klaf stole the show from the Aussie contingent by becoming World Champions in Over 75 Men's Doubles. After working their way through the early rounds, the Victorians outlasted the German brothers Horst and Jurgen Langer 3-1 in the semi final, before holding their nerve to come back from 2-1 down to claim a 5 games victory in the final over another German duo, Siegfried Lemke and Uwe Wienpretch. Hearty congratulations Buddy and Igor!
Multiple other Aussies also featured in the medals, summarised as follows:
GOLD
Buddy Reid and Igor Klaf (Over 75 Men's Doubles)
SILVER
Tony Herbert and Hans Pappon (Over 85 Men's Doubles)
Betty Bird and Jean White (England) (Over 80 Women's Doubles)
BRONZE
Katherine Gao (Over 50 Women's Singles)
Alice Abbas (Over 60 Women's Singles)
Paul Pinkewich and Nakamura Kotaro (Japan) (Over 65 Men's Doubles)
Buddy Reid (Over 75 Men's Singles)
Betty Bird (Over 80 Women's Singles)
Special mention also to our very own Dave Delpratt, who was Deputy Referee, further underlining his international credentials in the world of officiating.
Hats off to everyone who represented Australia, you've done yourselves and Australia proud!
