Connie Psihogios shines for Australia on Day One of Singapore Smash

Australia’s Connie Psihogios secured an outstanding straight games victory for Australia on Sunday, 22 February in the 2026 Singapore Smash event.

Psihogios took just over 23 minutes to secure victory over Egypt’s Mariam Alhodaby in the Round of 64 Women’s Singles event, to progress into the next round of matches, which are due to get underway today.

Psihogios came flying out of the blocks in the first game, with an 11-5 victory. She did however, look to be under a considerable amount of pressure from her Egyptian counterpart in the second game, as she slumped to a 7-1 deficit, but some outstanding table tennis from the Australian meant that she was able to level the score at 9-9, before saving a game point, where then she went on to complete the turnaround with a 12-10 win.

Again in the third game, Psihogios went behind, and saw herself 9-7 down after 16 points, but once more remained calm and collected, before winning the third game by a score of 13-11 to advance into the Round of 32 at The Kallang in Singapore.

Psihogios is due to be in action again on Tuesday, February 24, against third seed and two time world champion, Chen Xingtong.

Psihogios will team up with Minhyung Lee in women’s doubles action today, as they prepare to face India’s Diya Chitale and Yashaswini Ghorpade.

Australia had several other athletes in action, as Nicholas Lum was up against 15th seed Simon Gauzy in the Round of 64, and fought relentlessly for over 51 minutes against the Frenchman, but ultimately lost out in the final game. Lum was however, awarded the best point award of Day 1, for his incredible effort in the final set whilst 9-7 down.

Finn Luu also put up a valiant effort against the number one seed Chuqin Wang, but fell to a 11-2, 11-9, 11-8 defeat. Aditya Sareen also fought hard against Moldova’s Vladislav Ursu, but was defeated by three games to love (13-15, 7-11, 7-11).Sareen has paired up with Mexico’s Rogelio Castro in the Men’s Doubles, and will see themselves up against Swedish pair Anton Kallberg and Kristian Karlsson.

Finn Luu and Nicholas Lum will also begin their doubles tournament today, taking on he Belgian duo of Martin Allegro and Adrien Rassenfosse.

Australia’s Yangzi Liu won the first game in her Round of 64 encounter with Bernadette Szocs, but three consecutive games for the Romanian ensured that it would be Szocs who progressed into the next round.

Minhyung Jee is yet to begin her singles campaign, and she is set to face Portugal’s Fu Yu on table three at The Kallang at 12.35pm local time. Jee did however, pair up with India’s Akash Pal and advanced to the round of 16 with a straight games mixed doubles win over Chile’s Gustavo Gomez and Daniela Ortega.

Nicholas Lum and Yangzi Liu took the opening game in their mixed doubles match against Koen Pang and Jian Zeng, but were unable to advance to the next round as the Singaporean duo won the next three games.
