Para-table tennis coaching program on track for success
Published Fri 28 Aug 2020
Australia’s current and future Paralympic table tennis athletes are set to flourish, thanks to a new coaching initiative developed by Table Tennis Australia (TTA).
In line with its strategic priority of better mentoring its coaches, TTA has worked with Paralympics Australia to develop a working group and a series of videos to further educate coaches working with Para-athletes across the country.
The videos, funded by the AIS Pathways Solution Grant, not only aim to provide ongoing education opportunities for coaches, but also establish a clear pathway for coaches to develop internationally competitive players.
“It’s just remarkable to see the growth in the interest in Paralympic table tennis, and I really believe that investing time and resources into our coaches is going to be the foundation of success at future Games, far beyond Tokyo next year,” said TTA Para Performance Manager Sue Stevenson.
Having first begun the project in May this year, the Table Tennis Australia Para Coaches Group has grown from a small group to now having 29 members from all states and territories.
TTA’s National Head Coach (Para), Alois Rosario led the session together with Paralympics Australia Skill Acquisition Specialist Ross Pinder, and said he was thrilled to see great discussion amongst all of the coaching group.
“Our third session was held this week, where we shared our video on designing training sessions around decision making and progressions,” Rosario said.
“It gave coaches a good idea of how we’ve generated success in the past by identifying gaps in athlete performances, and really testing them at their limits to help them learn to adapt in competition and therefore progress.
“What I loved best was seeing the coaching group see so many opportunities for growth and development and I can tell already, it’s going to help drive the development of the next generation of Para-table tennis athletes.”
