Spinneroos the key to a brighter table tennis future in Townsville
Published Fri 18 Jun 2021
A strong belief that kids hold the key to a brighter future for the sport is the secret behind the success of junior programs at the Townsville Table Tennis Association (TTTA).
The club has been bringing Spinneroos to their community since the program launched in Term 1 2020 and coach George Logothetis is proud of what the club has been able to achieve in such a short time.
“Kids can teach you things beyond your imagination,” Logothetis said.
“The better and the earlier we educate them in our marvelous sport, the brighter the future we will have as a table tennis community.”
TTTA has run at least one Spinneroos program in every term since the launch, often adding additional activities such as the Girls Only Spinneroos or specific programs designed for Townsville’s Defence community.
Logothetis said that Spinneroos has been successful in opening the wider community up to table tennis.
“Every time we run a promotional activity for Spinneroos, we use it as a ‘door opener’ to all club activities, offering members of the community the ability to try other programs at the club,” he said.
TTTA have also successfully linked their Spinneroos and Junior programs, facilitating the transition process as participants reach the end of the Spinneroos age bracket (5-12 years). Logothetis puts this success down to the introduction of their Mini Juniors program, in addition to having a solid juniors program in place
“Mini Juniors is the bridge between the Spinneroos and the Juniors programs. We make the sessions a bit more technical, in a fun way, and we start to build and make the fundamentals stronger.
“When the participants have a better understanding of table tennis, we upgrade their sessions even more by making them part of our juniors squad. We are very proud that we had players starting from Spinneroos and then going all the way to compete in the Junior State Championships this year!” he said.
