Table Tennis Australia Unveils Modern Membership Model

Table Tennis Australia (TTA) has today announced an updated national membership model, designed to modernise the sport, improve retention, and create more ways for people to connect with table tennis.

Effective 01 January 2026, this will mark the most significant change to the sport’s membership structure in more than a decade and is an important step toward growing the sport nationwide.

The new model introduces five nationally aligned membership categories across all States and Territories:

  1. Fun & Fan: free entry-level membership
  2. Non-Playing: low-cost membershipfor umpires, referees, coaches, and administrators who don’t play but contribute off the court.
  3. Club Play: low-cost membershipfor social and recreational play
  4. Club Comp: for members participating in structured competitions at State level, including National Hopes and all Veteran players, regardless of state or national event involvement
  5. Comp Plus: for those competing at national events including TTA Tours, with added services and performance support

This nationally-aligned approach means the same membership categories and benefits will apply across every State and Territory, creating a more consistent and connected member experience, whilst the new Fun & Fan category positions table tennis to capitalise on 3.25 million Australians who identify themselves as table tennis fans, over half of whom are under 34 years of age, which represents an opportunity to welcome a new generation into the sport.

In the past decade, table tennis in Australia has recorded only modest growth in membership, lagging comparable racquet sports such as pickleball, badminton and squash. During this period, more than 75% of TTA’s operational roles have been supported by short-term government grants, underscoring the need for a more sustainable long-term approach, and a strategy to engage more players.

TTA CEO Nicole Adamson said the new membership model is all about meeting people where they are.

“We’ve got millions of fans and participants who love table tennis, and we want to make it easier for them to get involved and stay involved,” Ms Adamson said. “This new model is built around today’s players, fans and volunteers. It’s simple, modern and gives everyone a pathway to connect with the sport.”

A key part of the refreshed model is its value-based structure, ensuring members pay in line with the services, benefits and experiences they receive:

  1. Fun & Fan memberships are free, designed to welcome the two million Australians who have picked up a bat in the past year and want to connect to the sport
  2. Non-Playing is a low-cost category, aligned with the level of benefits provided
  3. Club Play membership fee is unchanged, and remains at a low cost for social players
  4. Club Comp stays consistent with current pricing, maintaining value for active club pennant and local competitors
  5. Comp Plus athletes will incur a price change for the TTA component of their membership fee which increases to $363.93, reflecting the unique value of its access to national events, and the enhanced competition experience and pathways it delivers.

Specifically, for Comp Plus athletes, their investment directly supports improvements such as:

  • Enhanced rankings and data integration.
  • Improved live streaming of key events – improved graphics and content overlays, along with a dedicated TTA platform for viewing content to enhance the experience.
  • Upgraded competition systems and event presentation – the new Stupa Competition Management system available for national, state and club events, providing streamlined registration, live scoring and match related data.
  • Exploring new ways to support athlete development nationwide, such as camps, remote coaching, and enhanced performance services.

This ensures that services can be sustained for Comp Plus players receiving higher-level benefits, while keeping the sport affordable and accessible for everyone else.

TTA CEO Nicole Adamson said this approach supports fairness and value. “We haven’t increased participation fees, and we’re committed to keeping the sport affordable,” Ms Adamson said. “Comp Plus is a value-adding category for players competing at the national events level, and the investment helps us deliver enhanced services to our athletes straight away.”

TTA President Graham Symons said the new model represents a major step forward in modernising the sport and ensuring it is better aligned with the needs and expectations of today’s players, fans and high-performance athletes.

“Table tennis has a huge community of fans and social participants across Australia, and this new approach allows us to better connect with them,” Mr Symons said. “We’ve taken a customer-focused path, simplifying membership choices, ensuring fair pricing, and creating clearer pathways for people to engage with the sport at every level.”

Mr Symons said it was important that affordability remained at the centre of the redesign. “There are no increases for social players or regular competitors. People can stay active and involved without added pressure. While our Comp Plus category is about delivering greater value for elite and nationally competing athletes, with revenue reinvested into upgraded competition systems, integrated rankings, and enhanced pathway support.”

He said the new model positions the sport for long-term growth. “This shift is about setting table tennis up for the future, strengthening our ability to serve the 3.25 million Australians who already enjoy the game and creating more opportunities for people to connect, compete and stay engaged.”

With the aim of building a stronger, more connected future, membership revenue will be reinvested into the sport to support:

  • Grassroots development and member growth
  • Better competitions and events
  • Improved pathways for athletes, coaches and officials
  • Upgraded digital systems for registration, rankings and communication
  • Consistent servicing across all States and Territories
  • A more sustainable financial model for the sport

These changes support TTA’s new customer-focused servicing model, also launching in 2026, which will use member feedback and data to continually improve the table tennis experience nationwide.

“Whether you’re a fan, a social player, a regular competitor or one of our incredible volunteers, these changes will help us to build a stronger future together,” Ms Adamson said.
