Table Tennis Australia welcomes announcement of "targeted dialogue" for Brisbane 2032 Olympic candidature
Published Fri 26 Feb 2021
Table Tennis Australia Ltd. (TTA) is excited by the news that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that it is entering into a “targeted dialogue” with Queensland as the preferred hosts of the 2032 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
National Program Manager (Para) Sue Stevenson said the opportunity to raise the profile of the Paralympic movement in Australia was fantastic.
“It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our Para-Athletes on home soil,” she said.
“It will be a real opportunity to raise the profile of even further of the Paralympic movement here in Australia.”
National Head Coach (Able-Bodied) John Murphy spoke with some of TTA’s rising stars who are just as thrilled about the prospect of a home Games.
Youth Olympian and Brisbane local Benjamin Gould said the announcement has left him speechless.
“It would be incredible to have an Olympic Games on home soil,” Benjamin said.
“To be able to compete amongst my family and friends and have them watching me on my home ground would just be unbelievable.
“To actually compete at the Olympic Games would just be I don’t even know how to describe it, I am at a loss for words.”
Finn Luu and Nicholas Lum are two of TTA’s athletes who will be reaching their prime by 2032. They are both aiming for Paris 2024 and LA 2028 Olympic Games in the lead up to potentially playing on home soil in 2032.
“I was really happy to hear that news this morning that the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games could be held in Brisbane in 2032,” Finn said.
“Hopefully I will have good experience with the Games in Paris or LA and hopefully I will be able to put myself in a position to compete for medals,” Nicholas said.
Finn doesn’t think it will just be the singles events you have to watch out for at the 2032 Olympics, the team event will be a show as well.
“I think the team event would be a big and very important part of the Olympic Games for us as our team will be quite strong in that generation and that could be a big medal opportunity,” he said.
