TOPS Served Up At Redland Bay State School
Children at Redland Bay State School this term have made table tennis their sport of choice for the summer months.
These physical activity sessions, part of Australian Government funded Sporting Schools program, aim to give children a taste of table tennis and encourage them to transition to club sport.
The TOPS program introduces table tennis to young people through a progressive range of fun and interactive lessons and activities.
As outside temperatures in Queensland have increased in term 4, table tennis has become a popular option for the physical education curriculum.
Brisbane Table Tennis Association Coach Jim James says the set-up at Redland Bay State School has been a good one to showcase the TOPS program to over 100 students.
"Being able to utilise the school hall and have access to plenty of quality equipment has made this program very popular with students and teachers", James said.
"The school has also made the tables available for lunch-time use in the hall, which allows for extended and co-operative play between children".
"The support of the school administration has been a big factor in the success of this program".
Schools registered with Sporting Schools are able to select from over 30 nationally endorsed sports.
Equipment including tables, nets, racquets and balls were supplied through Sporting Schools funding direct to the school.
Schools looking to conduct a TOPS table tennis program should contact State Development Officer Greg Fox on phone 0409 769 883.
