Yangzi Liu Cleared to Represent Australia

Table Tennis Australia is thrilled to share that Yangzi Liu has successfully won her appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and is now officially eligible to represent Australia at all levels of table tennis competition – including international championships and the Olympic Games. This is a landmark decision, opening the door for Liu to don the green and gold on the world stage.  

TTA CEO Nicole Adamson shared her excitement, "This is fantastic news for Australian table tennis. We’re thrilled for Yangzi and can’t wait to see her in action as we head towards the LA28 Olympic Games." 

A champion on the rise, currently ranked No.31* in world in the ITTF Women’s singles and Australia’s highest ranked senior female player, Yangzi’s appeal victory comes at a pivotal moment. Throughout 2025, she demonstrated her topflight talent across various major international events:  

  • WTT Champions Yokohama (August 2025): Liu opened the competition with a striking 3-0 victory over India’s former Commonwealth standout Manika Batra, showcasing her ability to deliver under pressure.  

  • WTT US Smash (July 2025): Yangzi pushed World #1 Yingsha Sun from China to the absolute limit in a five-set thriller.  

  • WTT Contender Tunis (April 2025): She advanced impressively to the quarterfinals, defeating Elizabet Abraamian 3-2 and Ece Harac 3-0, before narrowly falling to Sakura Yokoi.  

  • WTT Star Contender Ljubljana (June 2025): Liu scored a notable win over Sara Tokic (3-0) further cementing her status as a rising force.  

On a regional stage, Yangzi has continued to add to her growing list of achievements: 

  • 2025 ITTF- Oceania Senior Championships (Christchurch): She secured the women’s singles title retaining it from 2024 and also gained gold in the mixed doubles and women’s doubles, reinforcing her dominance in Oceania.  

Yangzi’s sporting journey to date reflects both determination and historic achievement. Her current form both regionally and internationally, positions her as a serious medal contender for upcoming world championships and the Olympic Games. From training in China and Portugal, to representing Australia on the world stage, Liu’s compelling story is one of resilience, dedication and triumph, and serves as inspiration for our future talent.
